@Patricio good morning and welcome to the maples forum. Thankyou for your comments about my Sangu kaku. Regarding planting one in 8a zone, IMO I don't think you will too many problems at all, but full sun all day long will result in some leaf scorch, so regular watering will be necessary. The other thing I would suggest is some protection from strong winds. Mine gets full sun most of the day and temperatures this year have got to 35°C in the Summer, resulting in some burning to some of the upper leaves. It happens!!!
The rule of thumb for maples is morning sun and afternoon shade. They are an understory tree so do well in dappled light. But there are some that can do well in full sun and actually thrive in this position, Emperor 1 comes to mind along with many of the reds.
So for Sangu Kaku I would say not the best for full sun, but the beautiful red branches in the Winter and especially in the snow is worth the chance in 8a.

I can harvest lots of seeds every year, but so far, none of the seedlings have displayed a red bark, or poorly.

I know the coral bark is a draw, but I love the size and placement of the leaves. Hoping mine will do well in this sheltered spot out of the wind:

23rd June 2021 and the second flush starts on my Sango Kaku.
Often overlooked in Summer, but I don't know why tbh, when you get leaves like these.

11th July 2021 and as this was asked about today on the forum by C @ChrisUk regarding how red the leaves are this year, I thought I would add my two photos here also, to show it is happening in other parts of England.

We still have the new growth colour on some of these leaves - who knows what's going on here:

This one starts to come into its own now. A must for every Winter garden IMO.

Exactly so - it's a fun tree all round, isn't it?

(Though to be honest, I may be the exception in that I actually fell in love with the summer displays it gives rather than the winter ones, which are just a lovely bonus. Something about the shape of the leaves and the way they cluster on the branches, not to mention the new growth colours, really make me love it. Definitely a treat all twelve months of the year!)

I have two Sango Kaku because it's one of my favourites: they're both doing their own things, which is interesting to see.

The little guy is still putting out new growth colours, with beautiful red-pink edging on the leaves and contrast against the strong greens of the older leaves:

    20211023 Sango Kaku-2.jpg 20211023 Sango Kaku-1.jpg

The big guy has gone uniformly yellow, all at once. Both trees are less than three feet apart in completely the same conditions. Weird.
