Well, a switch has been flipped and my little Osakazuki has started going into autumn reds for real. Close-up of the colour-change, and a pic of the whole tree (accompanied by one of my gardening-buddies)

The A word and it's still August, lol. Let's hope for a long period of colour this year.

Wouldn't that be lovely! I feel like we deserve it, after the thoroughly disappointing summer weather we've had!

No kidding! Brutally hot and dry weather in western US and Canada, and cloudy cold weather in the UK. Bad summer all around.

Sounds like we could have done with 50% of your weather and you could have done with 50% of ours to bring everything in line with where it was supposed to be... typical, isn't it??

I think this one is 'Azuma murasaki', received as a wrongly labelled young graft twenty years ago:

I visited Japanese Garden in Tallinn a few days ago. It seems, that they have planted a new Palmatum there.
Both the new one (red) and the old one (green) had color changes on some leaves of some branches.

Jungle mess end of garden as of today. Palmatum cultivars have enjoyed our lack of sun this summer but my Japonicum trees have not faired so well with brown edges and looking generally grumpy (I think prolonged wet weather was the issue), apart from Aconitifolium, moonrise, Attary and S. aureum - they have done well

Except for the remains of a couple of hurricanes (luckily we missed the worst of it), it's been pretty hot and dry this summer. Most JM's have survived, but a few are looking ragged.

Took some time to stop and smell the flowers this morning while attacked mercilessly by the mosquitos.

There's a severe car shortage going on but Harry got a new vehicle delivery in his BarkBox today. Far out man!!

I've got some too, they are colourful at the moment, some others are completely brown. This means they are ripe?

Usually, yes. When ripe they can easily be pulled away from the tree, kind of like how you know when apples are ripe.

Sometimes the empty (unfertilised) ones stay on the tree and then turn brown before the fertile ones, and the nutlet part on these looks smaller and skinnier.

This year some of the trees have suffered quite a bit. Lots of the leaves have been scorched (especially during the heatwave, several weeks ago). Can't wait for the autumn colors to show!

Been a l...o...n...g time since moisture fell from the sky here so a few snaps warranted,
though the rainy season is inching up.

I'm curious to know what causes the spotting and holes on the maple leaves? Lucky they're replaceable!

Also, could you tell what the flower in your first picture is? The liriopes are gorgeous - I wish mine grew like that.

I wish I knew what caused those holes. Insects? I never saw that before on a JM, but I have seen them on some other plant and weed leaves.

I don't know what those purple flowers are. They're very striking! My wife picked out a couple of planters with them with some other annuals and grass, but none of them were identified. I'll ask the nursery next time I go back.

Did a Google search and I think they are purple celosia: Deep Purple frontpage - Purple Celosia

Some of my "div" : acers from seeds, parents unknown.

The first one, March, August, and today. Didn't change that much :

    acerp-div-001_210413a.jpg acerp-div-001_210821b.jpg acerp-div-001_210917a.jpg

The second one, March and today. It was in a very small pot (7x7x8 cm "tomato pot") and lost its leaves because of the heat. I slip-potted it and one branch put on new leaves. There are viable buds on the other one. The leaves are rather of the "amoenum" type :

    acerp-div-002_210413a.jpg acerp-div-002_210917a.jpg

Another one that had reddish leaves when in the sun. I put it in the shade in late July and they turned green while retaining some of the red.
March, May, June (foreground), July and today:
