Today.... Friend very kindly took me there again.
Getting addicted to this amazing garden.
Wish it wasn't so far away.

    Another new one for me.
Wondering if it could it be Aralia cordata?
Should have had a closer look at the leaves.
    Your expert help requested please.

Sorry grey day /dark corner, pics not brilliant.
1st pic taken in 2014..shrub next to Dove Cott.

I don't know the genus that well, but looks like the Aralia californica we grow here. The inflorescence seems more pendant than cordata maybe? Could be a different species, but surely Aralia.

Thank you for your help Eric.
I don't know Aralia well but I was sure that is what it was from the flowers and berries.

Having the old pic from 7 years ago I see it hasn't grown any taller.
To left of Dove Cott, next to the steps...an extremely sheltered/shady part of this walled garden.

I posted photos of the Aralia californica at UBCBG at July in the garden, and three times since then.

Just had a helpful reply from Head gardener James Hannaford....

The plant is aralia cashmeriana, I split this earlier in the year. It is a very large woodland perennial which can reach up to 3m in the right conditions! It does need staking otherwise it tends to fall over before the end of the season."

I think maybe this is now spelt differently ...Aralia cachemirica.

It's a beautiful rainy day here today so I've been reading this and that on the computer. Spent some time looking at the Crathes Castle website and other castles in the vicinity.
Your photo of the aralia in front of the rock wall of similar colour is beautiful.
I'd sure love to visit there one day.
