I am looking to build a pergola soon this spring. I'm toggling with the idea of implementing some sort of metal rods as some of the lattice work that the grapes can climb.

What is safe, or what kinds of metal can harm the plants. (ie: copper, steel, aluminum, painted, rusted ....)

    Thank You

    Hello FrCDNgrl,

They all sound reasonably safe, best to avoid painted bars perhaps. Grape vines are often trained onto heavy steal wire, between strong posts. Would that work for you?

Steel wire would work. I was thinking of maybe the copper, just for the esthetics of it. I wont have paint, cause of course itll come off in time anyways.

    Thanks for the input
    Merci Beaucoup
