Hello. Does anyone know what this is? Growing on property in VA. May or may not be native to area though. Thank-you!
I held back as I do not recognise this. I am so sorry but having grown Digitalis lutea I do not think it is a match. Colour is wrong. Flower has too many points. Digitalis lutea flowers have only 5 pointed parts . Mystery mage right hand flower shows 6 points. Flowers are drooping down...cannot see inside. Foxgloves normally face out. Would like to see more pics.whole plant/looking into the flower etc. digitalis lutea flower macro - Google Search digitalis lutea flower macro - Google Search
Interesting Silver surfer, I can't think of anything else that is a close match than this. Wonder if it's a rare anomaly!!?
Thank-you all for input. I agree with Silver surfer...it was close but I had questions so I googled and posted my unknown here. Person to whom unknown belongs bought plants from here Small Yellow Foxglove Seeds (Digitalis lutea) ....where they also sell D. lutea seeds and though she did not buy the seeds she thinks they came along with another plant she bought from there which makes sense. However, is it possible that this is some kind of horticultural variety of the wild type?
Thank-you Acerholic. I was looking at pics in links Silver posted and while majority of plants have the typical foxglove appearance with the flared flower that is facing out and were generally more colourful there were some pics that came close to the unknown....HUGE variety for one species!
I think it might be difficult to pin this one down. As you say a huge variety for one species. Somewhat like maples these days.
Interesting. So the lower petal is notched on some flowers and not notched on others. I think it matches a *few* photos of what is claimed to be Digitalis lutea online, but looks pretty distant from some others. I don't know enough about Digitalis to know whether they hybridize or not, but the flip-flop on petal notching suggests to me that this may be a hybrid with Digitalis lutea as one of the parents.
Thank-you for your input. Yes seems a bit odd for a foxglove...I suppose it would be a bit farfetched to imagine a Penstemon being crossed w/Digitalis but this is really what it looks like to me!
