another 2 trees, and another mystery. these ones on the east side of the reservoir as you approach the east look out. They are very close to a poor ginkgo that has multi leaders. They have the slightly hairy pedicels, and largish white petal. buds are a bit pinker on these trees. in the large panoramic pic they are the 2 small trees in the centre between the dome and the bare trees along the right side of the photo. i tried to get some of the backs to look at the sepals, but I don't know what the difference is between Somei-yoshino and Akebono for the sepals. the big green stars that the sepals create, are noticeable when pic is back lit.

last of our QE cherry visits on Thursday. this one is in the lower quarry garden, just below Seasons restaurant's patio. this is a great little garden to check out anytime you are at QE. Lots of interesting plants. There is even a cactus that has made it through at least 2 winters! And a beautiful Shishishgashiri Japanese Maple (its labeled!) This cherry was very tall and far away so unable to get decent pics of flowers. But it is very white, very pom pomish. the green along the branches is from lichen and moss growth. Its a very lopsided tree that grows over the path as you head back down to the road on the east side of the park. Maybe someone with a good telephoto lens can get better pics of the flowers?

Still pretty tight in bud, but this group of, i think it was 3, Shirotae in QE along 37th close to Alberta St. I did not detect a scent, but it was so cold and so blowy today that is not surprising. I didn't get a full tree shot. pale pink buds, pinkish sepals. you can just detect some of the hairy edges to the leaves that are also starting to open. the one shot the tips of the leaves look a bit like a pair of crab claws curving towards each other.

    Looks like 'Somei-yoshino'.
'Akebono' are not supposed to have witches' broom like that, though the ones in Stanley Park do. I'd call it 'Somei-yoshino'.

Thank you so much. We are so fortunate to live in a city where we can get out and enjoy these blossoms of spring! Hope you and your wife, are too able to get out and enjoy springtime in Hampshire.

Thankyou Lisa, just about as the restrictions are gradually week by week lifting, but it's not like it was before sadly. So for this year we will be watching all the blossoms from BC and Japan on the forum.

Here is a Shirotae blooming and hiding again beside a white Star Magnolia, on the west side of Dinmont (by alley), south of Nigel at April 16, 2021. They look both compatible and companionable.

The two Umineko trees in the playground area on the east side of Ontario (south of E. 30th), across from Nat Bailey Stadium, have passed peak bloom with their red centres at April 16, 2021.

What with all the heavy construction machinery around the 33rd Avenue parking lot of Queen Elizabeth Park, we have forgotten all about Oyama-zakura. The Big Mountain Cherry is now finished with us at April 19, 2021.

At UBCBG last week, I ran into someone I haven't seen for quite a while, who asked me about that tree, wanted to know what it was. I was able to show her the one at UBCBG that looks very similar. It had flowers last week.

On the Ontario bikeway, between 18th & 19th Avenue, there are several magnificent, old Ukons currently in full bloom:

I love it when the flowers have all the characteristics they're supposed to have. I'd have no trouble identifying these at 'Shogetsu'. What's with all these other things I'm having trouble with this year?

Thank you, Acerholic. Sorry no mountains, though - they were in a cloak of clouds.
