The 'Pandora' in Stanley Park, just off Lagoon Drive near Nelson, is in bloom.

And the 'Somei-yoshino' on Pendrell is open as well.

Curiously, the 'Akebono' next to it is almost open, farther along than the Burrard Station trees, which are usually the first to open.

The 'Accolade' trees two blocks away are at peak bloom now. The ones on Chilco, the half block north of the mini-park, look better than the ones in the park.

'Ama-no-gawa' at the downtown liquor store are not in bloom at all, but one of the trees on Alberni has a lovely profusion of blooms on its 'Colt' rootstock growth, the only of several trees here to admit to being grafted. These flowers are very fragrant. The third photo demonstrates the unfolding of cherry leaves, which differs from the unrolling of plum leaves. You can see the scion buds in the fifth photo.

I knew I had something else to post - this poor 'Whitcomb' on Nelson at Bute, or half a 'Whitcomb', is still in bloom. In the second photo, the left side was in full bloom a month ago, with no flowers open on the right side. So the newer flowers on the right side are considerably darker than the ones on the left. I said "this poor thing", because that's the impression it gives for most of the year, including the start of its blooming season, but it looks pretty good right now.

'Akebono' are open in the West End. I didn't take any photos, so here's a photo of one in the yard of my building. I don't remember when it was planted, but the first photo is from 2007, second photo from just now. The tree was pruned either last year or the year before.

The 'Shirotae' at the community centre is just starting to open its blossoms.

That was three days ago; there are a lot of flowers open today. I'm including a photo of the trunk spiraling up to the right.

The flowers are beautiful, but the trunk is the jewel in the crown for me. Overlooked at this time of the year I bet, so glad you posted it Wendy.

These young 'Akebono' trees have grown up enough to be a draw, but people seemed to be keeping their distance. This is at the end of Alberni, at Lost Lagoon, at the underpass to the north side of Georgia Street.

    Could become a festival favourite.

I always liked that stand of trees. it’s adjacent to the ‘Welcome to Vancouver’ sign as you drive in from Stanley Park Causeway.

Stanley Park Rose Garden on 7th of April. 95% opened now besides some buds on the trees furthest from the highway.

Also the Shirotae trees along the path to the Japanese memorial buds look pretty much all open.

This professional photo opportunity was posted the other day on the official Twitter for Vancouver Police Department (screen photos attached)

Beautiful blossoms nr Lumbermans Arch, fine pair of service horses (who are stabled right in Stanley Park) and loyal K9 posing for what I hope will be images in their annual calendar that raises funds for various worthwhile charities in the city

That's fun. Maybe I'll have to buy their next calendar, not that I use one of those.

3 Akebono's west of the aquatic centre and east of the parking lot/ball hockey rink. Beach ave Between Thurlow and Bute. Best seen from the old bike path on the seawall. There were petaloids. I had to get the palm tree in there too......tropical Vancouver ;0

That would be two and 1/3 'Akebono' trees, with the 'Akebono' part of the one on the left being consumed by the rootstock. The Parks Board assured me in an email that the rootstock would be removed, and maybe they really did look at it and decide it was too far gone by then. It's a shame, because the three were a nice planting.

I think this is a block of Mikuruma-gaeshi. North side of Pendral, behind the backside of the Sylvia hotel. between Denman and Gilford st. The trees are looking very gawky, but the flowers beautiful. I thought they were quite large, but too far up the tree to put a coin next to for scale. I think i do see some pink veins along the petals, and the buds are a nice dark pink.

i think it was 3 young trees, Akebono's. I found the petaloid. This on Lagoon drive just before you take the bike path up to Haro.

Akebono's mixed with Somei-yoshino on the grassy area between the over pass, round about. south of pipeline drive, south of park drive. Just enough space for these trees, some grass and a few picnics. These pics of the Akebono. again found the petaliod!

Magnificent specimens......I thought this one might have been Somei-Yoshino because I couldn't find petaloid and the stars were large......but map shows them as Akebono. these on the West side of Pipeline road. Very busy today with lots of people enjoying the blossoms....although all spaced out appropriately.

absolutely magnificent grove/double row pathway of Shirotae on the way to the Japanese War Memorial in Stanley Park. There was a slight scent of Almonds in the air, but it was a coolish day so not as noticeable as it will hopefully be later this week when the temperature warms up and those scents will be heady hopefully. walking under this grove is magical. the white and green makes the whites feel crisper somehow. and I do like those little hairy bits, at the base of the flower stalk (bracts?). The flowers too seem to be a bit frilly.
