Hollyburn Apartments (550 W. 12, south-side, between Cambie and Ash) has planted a six-Sakura guard shield along its front perimeter. From the tree shapes, you'd immediately think "Snofozam" but no! Bulgy calyxes, hairy pedicels, the Ito-zakuras are finishing their bloom on March 29, 2020.

Five years later, this lone Shogetsu still looks good. I thought it was Shirotae but see this is the same tree already identified as Shogetsu. The tree was too tall for me to get a great view with the breeze.

Oh, come on, what's that doing out already? Actually, your photo is convincing enough for 'Shogetsu'. I guess it has a nice hot spot in front of that wall.

It's almost at the entrance to Vancouver General Hospital, but it's young, so this Shiro-fugen looks like it's doing well at 805 W. 12/Willow on April 18, 2020. Right across the street is a little parkade of Kanzan.

This Avium at W.12 and Fir had some low branches with large flowers, allowing good close-ups of leaves, flowers, buds and retroflex sepals at April 18, 2020.

I think this is a row of 'Shiro-fugen' along the false creek bike/walk way. This is along Creekside drive after you come up the hill and are at the crest, traveling east. They are young trees, and have been planted i think rather recently, last 2 years maybe? separating the bike lane from the road. you can see the pair of leafy pistals that look like elephant trunks again in the centre. The peduncle and pedicel (stems of the flower) are very long and the little leafy bit (bract) at the end of the peduncle, where they branch into 3 pedicels is a bit hairy in some of the pics. It think that is the correct terminology, but maybe someone can correct it if that is wrong.....The lovely pink bud with bronze new growth, and the flowers that are white with bronze new growth to leaf......maybe next week or the week after the flowers will have changed to their pink colour and the leaves will have changed to green......will need to do this bike ride again to check them out.

Shogetsu has had its moment in the sun. The frilly white is turning to frilly pink as it finishes its bloom on the north side of W. 2nd, east of Pine at April 25, 2020. No more moonlight on the pines.

Two Birch Bark cherry trees are part of the front landscaping at the Monterey building (north side, 633 W. 8th, west of Ash). Planted at the far western edge of the building they are easily missed what with the shadows, their own inconspicuous flowers and the Kanzan drama around them. At April 25, 2020.

Wow, they've grown quite a bit in one year - I've made them a festival favourite.

Linda Poole, the VCBF Artistic Director, has sent along this photo of the 'Accolade' cherries at City Hall. I think this means that the festival season is now open.
