    @Acerholic
    We still have winter, we have just had minus 10 and under, we have a lot of Covid worries and work, so I am planning to let someone from a nearby nursery prune my maples. I know most of you do it by yourself, but at the moment I cannot concentrate on maples at all and I think at least they have experience in pruning which I have not. Do you have any tipps what I should tell them to do or not to do. I was only planning on telling them which shape I want to achieve on which maple and that they shall help with their work to get there...

    That is very cold A, so I would hold off pruning until the weather is really on the turn. My pruning here in the South of England starts at the beginning of March, but and here's the but, I do check the long range forecast just in case a severe cold snap is going to hit in March.
    As far as pruning for you this year is concerned, I would not do anything severe at all. My advice would be dead, diseased or dying branches only and of course any obvious crossing. 'But that is all'. Let your trees establish and then in the Summer you can look at tidying 'if necessary'. But again not much at all.
    Hope that's of help.

    @zfrittz as said you should never prune in negative temps.

    I have pretty good germination from A. pictum f. amiguum, you might want to check if you have time.

    Best and stay safe to you both. -E

    Actually I shouldn't be surprised : I went to Sicily a couple of times and there are huuuuge Ficus in Palermo's botanical garden (I still have some photos in the labyrinth of my computer), or even as street trees, and it's about the same latitude.

    Yes, and that goes for other species than maples too.

    And the end of winter/beginning of spring is usually rather wet here, so that means using a (copper-based) fungicide after pruning to avoid the nasty fungi maples are so sensitive to.

    @emery I have already born the A. pictum f. amiguum, some A. villa taranto, Garnatense two, I'll put photos.
    @AlainK In my area the only ficus there are are the ficus carica, I have a bonsai of ficus retusa, and it spends the winters in the street without suffering the least low temperatures, the winters are very mild, even though it is near Sierra Nevada.

    @zfrittz I following your post I went and looked this morning, massive germination from the small-leaved monspessulanum, which had gone too far unfortunately, but I will probably still get some plants. The granatense just germinating well at the good stage, as well as (surprisingly) a hardy sinense from the Rogow stock. All 3 planted out to trays now

    Hi... I’m back!!!

    I have started to move my plants to my new, although temporary home. Still about 40-50 slightly bigger ones to go, but it’s a start.

    I feel very, very happy!

    Luke

    Thanks Alain. I appreciate it. I have missed this very much. I have experienced what rock bottom feels like over Christmas, but I’m starting to get my s**t together again.
