Do you ever tip prune fig trees for winter? Branches are long and I think they will rock in the winter winds.

    Myself, no, never in winter.

I think the best time to prune a fig tree is in Spring, just before the tree comes out of dormancy.
However, I did just do some light pruning (November 1) to remove three or four branches. And I coated the cuts with pruning/grafting compound to seal the wound. This should prevent bleeding and possible infection.

I will do a heavier pruning in the Spring; I just wanted these few low-hanging branches out of the way so I could work around the tree easier.

I prune my figs early spring and focus on thinning the centre of the tree and take out the weak, diseased, and the two year old wood and older . My fig tree produces enough for my family, neighbours and friends. Once you prune well in the spring and maybe a light summer pruning your tree is set to face the winter. Good luck
