@AlainK, good morning Alain, you are to be congratulated on how well your trees look after the extreme weather you have suffered this Summer.
The roots must be very happy!! Very impressive Alain.

My sister gave me this one as a bonsai in 2007. It had no label and at first I thought a 'Shishigashira', but my friends told me it was not. After asking in several places, I finally decided to call it "Crippsii'. It matched the photos on Maillot's website.

I wanted to post a photo to compare it to 'Shishigashira'. It has slightly smaller leaves, but the internodes are much smaller, sometimes 2 or 3 mm only. But from the photos and descriptions in the thread about 'Crippsii', it seems it's very different. I also Checked Vertrees & Gregory, they describe it very similar to 'Okushimo' and 'Kurui Jishi' : ??????

Anyway, here are a couple of photos. The 1st one when it was bought, the second and third ones today. It isn't as strong as 'Shishi' and hasn't been repotted for quite a few years so its stays rather small :

The 'Shishi' is in full shade, the other one gets the sun from 9 to 15 or smthg.

NB : the 'Crippsii' or smthg can easily be air-layered, and develop a root flare that bonsai enthusisast like. But the branches are very brittle and hard to shape. The first one is still alive, the other one was dead when I got back from holidays two years ago.

@AlainK, what a lovely gift. Must be a 15 year old Crippsii or something now. Was it in the ground at any time to thicken the trunk? I love the root flare btw.

It's always been potted, repotted in a slightly larger pot each 2 or 3 years after pruning the roots. It's been in this pot for about 4 years, high time I repot it next year.

At first I wanted to train it as a bonsai, but other small-leaves cultivars are easier to work with. I haven't given up such a project, maybe with the tree itself or other air-layers, but another of its inconvenients is that scars heal much slower than on the plain species or other cvs. For the moment repotting it next spring is the priority.

@AlainK, 4 years in the same pot and compost!! It is doing well. That is an impressive trunk being in a pot for it's life.

Not compost : my basic soil mix is 70% 5-7mm pozzolane and 30% composted pine bark. I also add pumice, or "repotting soil" in low quantity, and "Akadama" (up to 60%) for bonsai.

But the 70/30 mix is the basics : works well here.

@AlainK, I should have said properly and not just 'compost. I have my own mix also.

Boris is starting to freak me out. I just checked on him tonight and he has now set up between a low oak branch and the Aucuba. He was still spinning the web and it's got to be almost 5 feet in diameter! I took some pics but it's a little hard to see. I have motion sensor floodlights that are blinding the camera a bit. I tried with them off but the camera couldn't focus on the web.

Good morning, on a very sticky day in the UK. Just went out and took these. Now the heat is taking it's toll.
I have three favourites today. Coral Magic, Beni tsukasa and the ever popular one in my garden Ukigumo.

Hi everyone. I haven’t been on here much recently and my maples have been feeling sorry for themselves due to the heat. I had a little look around today and saw some nice ‘2nd flush’ growth, and decided to take a few pics. Hope you like them.

@Luke’s Maples, first of all Luke, there is no doubting your love of maples, Lol.
Secondly that is a fine display and especially as the heat there is at record temperatures.
Thirdly, you haven't been on for a while, but it was worth waiting to see your lovely trees.

    Really enjoyed them Luke.
