I found this at a specialty nursery, and it was a variety I had never seen before. In fact, I can find no info on it at all!! The nursery owner said it has nice yellow fall color and stays dense and small - 6' to 8' max.

It almost looks like is has some subtle variegation in the leaves. I also like the bushiness of this plant - very stocky and tree-like.

    Neat tree K4.

I can't find one word about 'Windover' either. If I were you, I'd pester the specialty nursery until they told me where they got it. Then just follow that trail. I love a good mystery!

I did that once when I was trying to find out about 'Van den Akker'. I ended up talking to a member of the Van den Akker family! Pretty neat.

I thought I would post some updated pics from this spring.

So far, A.p. 'Windover' seems to be a quite vigorous, yet dense growing tree. It may be a semi-dwarf, but I find it hard to call it a dwarf. The leaves are medium sized and spaced out somewhat along the branch.

A pleaseant surprise was the new growth, which I failed to capture a picture of. It is quite striking in a salmon-pink color. You can see the last of it in the picture from this morning.

    UPDATE:

I finally found out where this plant came from! It was introduced by Brian Upchurch of Highland Creek Nursery. This cultivar was discovered growing on his in-laws property in North Carolina, which is called Windover Farm. The mother tree is about 20 years old and 12 feet high. It still retains its "lollipop" form with a straight trunk and dense, bushy, rounded crown. A delightful selection.

That is interesting info K4. Nice looking plant. I'm going to go and see if it made the "checklist"!

Very lovely tree. I still can't find any info on this one. @Kaitain4 are you still growing this one and do you graft?

Yes, my tree is about 7-8 ft tall now. I do graft on occasion.

I may have an old one. I’ll check. This year we had a late freeze and all my maples took a hit. Most of the leaves either fell off and never grew back, or they were partially scorched and stayed on, or a combination of both. So most of my trees look somewhat threadbare at present.

I found 1 closeup of fall color. Will look some more later.

Sorry to hear about the hit your maples took. We had two hail storms that damaged a few of mine this year.

So whatever pics you can find I will be happy to see. Thanks @Kaitain4

Here’s one from this morning. It’s normally much more dense. 1BAF91C0-8BEE-4F43-AF19-9141004E7444.jpeg I grafted a couple this morning on some marginal understock. We’ll have to wait til spring to know if they’re any good.

@Kaitain4, good afternoon, can I ask, is that the same tree as the 2009 photo? Lovely mature specimen whichever it is.

Hey sounds good. I hope they take I'm definitely interested. It has matured nicely. Looks like a very nice understory spot as well.

@Kaitain4, the beauty of photos that tell the trees story. An 'impressive' maple.

I did manage to find a photo of Windover in fall colors. This is probably 5 years ago. It’s a very strong yellow, almost ‘School Bus Yellow’
in a good year. It does exhibit blocks and flecks of red in the leaves as well, and I had a graft of it once that turned all red in the fall. So, the color may have something to do with sun exposure. This is a very CB1A2776-F8D0-40AD-97E4-9E2D1FCED56F.jpeg neat tree, that seems to have grown fairly evenly even though it is in the shade of a huge oak. I did tip prune if for a few years just to keep it balanced, but haven’t touched in 6 or 7 years. Let’s hope for the best on the grafts.

Those yellow leaves are stunning. I think its in the prefect spot. The pics you just posted and the one from Nov 08 have done it for me.
