Nice find @Nik! You are correct it is a slime mold / myxomycete. This is the wolf's milk slime mold, Lycogala epidendrum.

Hi D, thanks for the info! Yes, it does look more like the Physarum polycephalum. Too bad, it would have been cool to have wolf’s milk slime mold and coywolf in the yard. I have seen the dog vomit slime mold several times. That “connection” works too.
No wait, their labeling of the pictures was off.. I guess it is wolf’s milk after all!!! Definitely not Physarum polycephalum.

Journalists get a lot of things wrong when reporting on fungi and myxomycetes I find - perhaps this is common in biology or science articles - and yes in this case their captions were a wee bit off. @Nik - your specimen is still Lycogala epidendrum :-)
