What on earth 'tis doing here,
    I cannot say, a volunteer
thin of stem, bereft of leaf
    almost tiny past belief.
Should I keep it through the snows
and wait to see what next year grows
or discard it on the spot
to the compost bin to rot?

    Ixia...?

Tiny plant is not so mere
Here it blooms and brings us cheer.
Small it is but strong indeed
    Assuredly, no mean weed.
Save it from the rude heave-ho!
Time will show plant's worth, I know.
Stay your hand, discard it not
Await and see what Nature's wrought!

Well, soccerdad and togata57, you have certainly raised the tone of discourse on these forums.

I am impressed and amused and maybe too intimidated to ever write another word.

This is too clever to pass off the New Posts list so quickly. We should all be so inspired!

I was afraid to Like your "raised the tone of discourse" posting lest you think I was liking your being too intimidated to ever write another word. But I see you did write another word, so I Liked the posting.

I jumped right to the verse, totally missed the suggested ID until just now. It does look a lot like Ixia 'Spotlight', or maybe some other hybrid. There's one called 'Blue Bird' that looks pretty similar. Common name is corn lily.

If it is in fact a spontaneous seedling then it is not a vegetative propagation of a named form.

Ixia it is, I doubt it not
So I will leave it in its spot
I cut it off but think it lives
and hope that joy the next year gives.

    Pretty bloom ID has got
    Standing tall in its woodlot.
Eternal springs sweet hope life gives
    Mercy is restorative.

All y'all are a pure delight
    With repartee making light
Of Ixia. You are so glib
    With your witty, poetic adlib.
