Cheering ourselves up with Maples

I tripped over and snapped off the larger of two trunks on my Mikawa Yatsubusa 4 years ago in winter when the bare limbs were barely visible.
Slowly a new shape is evolving.
April and recent from a vaguely similar vantage point, and a couple framing a Japanese forest grass.

 

Hi G , sometimes something special comes from what we think at the time is a disaster. Your Mikawa is that something. I do love to have some fun with my trees, creating a shape, so IMO yours looks a fun shape.

I can imagine how you must have felt at the time. It has grown back in to a lovely interesting tree.

Kiddie and sweetshop comes to mind. The boot of my car would have a few of these to bring home. 'Lovely'. Fortunately for my bank balance the Atlantic is between this nursery and me, lol.

I should put it next to this Butterfly for the contrast. Almost no pink variegation this year. This one is in the shade, but it's the same with the big one (1m60) in full sun that I gave to my son :

It's fascinating the differences of colours etc, from one country to the next. Or area tbh.
I do enjoy the witches brooms with their short central lobe. Jerre Schwartz is a lovely olive green in your garden atm.
Your Butterfly has a lovely creamy look, that draws you in to look deeper into the tree. I love that.
The Red wine I've been thinking about myself for a while now, with the faint tinges of red, it's a wonderful addition to any collection.
And as for your seedlings, I think they're 'GREAT'.

AlainK, I love your 2016 seedling.

Here some of my 2nd and 1st year seedlings.
Sharp’s Pygmy, which is struggling in deep shade.
And Digitalis purpurea f. albiflora, not native, but grows wild in my yard. Just beginning to open. Every year I remove most new plants but leave just a few.

 

@Nik, good afternoon Nik, that is a great carpet of green with a wonderful red Sharps pygmy seedling that looks so natural amongst the rocks. I hope it survives the winter.
I like the array of other seedlings, soon for a few special ones to be potted on???
It must be so colourful to have Digitalis popping up and growing wild in your garden.

It's a real seedling day today. When this awful wind and rain stops, I will take a look at mine to see if they are worth posting.

Went to buy more flowers for my Mum's balcony, and some paint too.

Came back with that ^^ :


The leaves look a bit dull but that's because they've sprayed all their maples. Most of trhem are scorched, there are still some shirasawanum 'Aureum' like the one I bought, they're still alive, but in poor condition. So I felt that for 18.85 € (rather unusual price by the way) it was my duty to save this 'Starfish' which was still in good shape.

 

Your right Alain, it had to be saved, there was obviously no other course of action available to you !!!!! Lol.
It is a wonderful maple though, so different are the Convexum group. Here is mine resting on top of my Thuja Occidentalis Rheingold last evening.

A close-up of the leaves that developped after the tree was sprayed. Though the lower leaves are blurred, you can see the small whitish spots of the fungicide.

Blurred background : in the top left, Acer pentaphyllum, in the bottom right, 'Hana Matoi'. And at the top the green, compuond, not-serrated leaves of Agnus-castus.



Acer circinatum 'Burgundy Lace'. It's a fast grower : it was about 60 cm (2 ft) when I bought it two years ago and it's now over 1m50 (5 ft) although it's potted. The new leaves are in shades of burgundy red, almost violet depending on the light, and the older leaves are greener. They remind me of the colours of a tartan scarf I bought for my late father in the late 70s ^_^ (in the bgd, a sort of 'Atropurpureum') :

 

It looks like we’re all at it lol. Very nice Starfish. I don’t have this one... yet.

 

The sun has just come out, although I cannot believe this temperature it's 12° in June. It was 28° just three days ago.
Took a few that don't normally get a showing.
Now back in for a hot chocolate, lol
I bet our Spanish friends are sipping iced drinks atm. And our US friends are having a cold one.

How bizarre this weather is !!!!

Hi @AlainK, are you sure thats 'Burgundy Lace' and not 'Burgundy Jewel'?

 

I picked up Trompenberg, Beni shigitatsu, and Shirazz today.

 

Oops, yes, it's 'Burgundy Jewel'.

You treated yourself to three of the most colourful and interesting maples IMO. They look very healthy trees and lovely in the Rhode Island sunshine.
