Hi - my clematis "sunset" is four years old, has healthy foliage, roots are shaded, tops get lots of sun. But it never has any blooms. Should I yank it out and start again with a new one?

    Thanks for any advice!

There are 2 main reason for non blooming Clematis.
    1. Wrong pruning.
    2. Wrong fertilizing.

Agree with the suggestion regarding pruning

I have pretty good success w clematis and I never prune or fertilize - tho I like that wild look and have a forest shade garden w rich loam

However if you have trimmed - or wish to - you need to know the “pruning group”

Here is the info directly from Clearview - a longtime Fraser Valley wholesale nursery specializing in clematis .... i would say that it would be difficult to buy any clematis around the BC Lower Mainland that is NOT from this wholesaler.

    Start here
    Sunset

Then look up the pruning type

This is helpful assuming the label exactly correctly matched the plant you purchased.
