Hi@AlainK, my wife just bought me my very first Bonsai pot. Think she's realised I won't stop buying maples, but now I have to keep them small. Looks like that's the first argument I've won in 42 years. Probably the last though!!!!

Any tree that will feel comfortable and look nice in this pot !;-)

Usually this kind of medium-high unglazed pot suits well slender conifers, what purists call "bunjin", "literati". But I think a spreding maple, a laceleaf for instance would do fine too.

Most of the time deciduous, in particular maples, are displayed in shallower glazed containers : the colour (often in shades of blue) enhances the Autumn colours, the low pot underlines the "nebari", the base of the tree which is much less important for conifers.

Hi@Jaybee63, now that looks floaty, the black grasses underplanted sets it off well. Think mine was an embryo just last week!!! A slow grower but something to look forward to in a few years.
    Thanks for showing these.

    An idea to plant there.
A juniperus, a pine, ultimately a coniferous, a maple would look with a rare contrast in that pot.
As Alaink says, for maples it is much better for enamel pots and very flat and colored, blue, cream, green etc.

It's getting warmer, 20°C. Mostly cloudy with sunny patches and an occasional very light shower of rain.

I have this seedling, the one on the right, with the shirasawanum in the bgd which looks a bit different from the plain species. the leaves are a pale green with red fringes :

    200503a_ja.jpg acer-div_200503a.jpg

As a comparison, a plain species "bonsai" - the one in the bottom left corner in the first photo :

    acerp-x0313_200503a.jpg

... and next to it another bonsai, 'Orange dream' :

The close-ups are a bit darker than in real life.

Hi@AlainK, that's a lovely seedling, they are so much fun, you never know what will come up.
And why not have a garden full of unamed maples IMO. There is always the chance you will have many that are different to anything anybody else has and very pretty trees indeed.
20 degrees eh!, sounds lovely. My thermometer says 12.

@Alain - Amazing trees, the tree in the 1st photo, green pot, that appears to be very old massive nebari, how old would that tree be, and what cultivar?

I don’t do very well with bonsai..it is clearly a whole different ball game..left to those that know the way! But I do admire them greatly

    Which one ?

I suppose you mean the field maple, an Acer campestre which is slightly different from the ones we find around here. The lobes are less dissected and the leaves a bit coaser, but that's probably just a genetic difference in the same species. :

    acerc01_200503a.jpg

Or do you mean the Acer buergerianum in a blue pot ?

    acerb02_200503a.jpg

Both need a few more years to begin making "good" bonsai. The whole story for each of them :

Acer / Acer buergerianum / Acer buergerianum 2 | Arbres, arbustes, bonsaï et plantes

Acer / Acer campestre / Acer campestre 1 | Arbres, arbustes, bonsaï et plantes

Alaink, beautiful bonsai, are well on their way to becoming quality bonsai.
This is where the battle of temperature begins, today the 35º C (95 ° F) thermometer was marking me.
