I’m wondering why the very tips of these branches are brown. I’m thinking there should be a new cluster of leaves there.

That looks like a leaf stalk without the 5, 6, or 7 leaflets that belong there. Usually, the individual leaflets and the stalk stay united and go yellow and fall off as a unit. Also usually, clusters of new leaves arise out of the base of existing clusters of leaves. I don't know why there are no leaflets at the end of that stalk. That's "history", and you're in charge of that. You, or a plant eating animal in your household. Cat or dog?

Not me. Lol. Don’t have a cat or dog. It had been outside, so maybe a deer or some other animal ate it, didn’t think of that. I’ve got it inside now. Thanks for your input!

If the leaves are being consumed, be aware that Schefflera arboricola contains calcium oxalate crystals and so would be toxic to some degree.
