This is scolopendrifolium which did fine in its 2nd year here. About 3 weeks ago, the leaves started drooping and falling off. The only thing I could see that seemed to need doing was to take the tape off between the stick and the trunk, and then there was this red stuff on the trunk from under the tape. Might this be a fungus? The plant is making new buds where the leaves fell off, so i am stumped. Any ideas?[IMG] [IMG]

I'm not sure this is the source of the problem, to me it looks like the remains of grafting wax.

Glad to eliminate that, anyway. I guess I will watch and wait.

If the first picture shows the leaves as they are now, it should be OK, but it's not so good to leave weeds, or plants in the soil of a potted tree.

If the tree is under stress and weak, the roots of other plants will take over and choke the roots of a weak maple. I think you should remove them.

Thank you. This is a volunteer bacopa, an escapee from a flower basket, an annual. It's done now anyway, so out it will go.
