I had a sweet bay tree that lasted for about 4 years; not quite sure what went wrong but am looking for another one... anyone know where I can find one on Vancouver Island? They are hard to find here and many nurseries suggest they won’t grow here...

I saw 4' trees for sale in Canadian Tire in Courtenay yesterday. Not sure if any made their way into the Nanaimo location. Before moving I left a 12 ' tree back in Lantzville two months ago.
    Cheers, Barrie.

Any shrub/tree marked Laurus nobilis is probably a bay tree. California bay (Umbellularia californica) is sometimes mislabelled as sweet bay, but the smell/taste is a lot harsher, and it is not recommended for culinary use due to the chemical composition of the leaves. I grew a bay in Coquitlam for many years, so as long as it's in the ground and in a sheltered location for the winter it should be fine on the Island.
