    Hello All!

We are looking at removing 4 silver maples from our property as they are dropping branches, and I'm afraid they're going to damage the property. They were planted as shade trees, what trees would be a good fast(ish) growing hard(er) wood replacement for them? I am in zone 5a.

    Thank you!

Go to the University of Florida 680 Tree Fact Sheets and look for yourself. This will tell you the characteristics of everything under the sun, --the good, the bad, and the ugly. It won't take long before you eliminate a lot of things and you'll discover lots of options. You want to make a list of those that the author says, "Nice tree, should be used more..." Trees are great, but you can only have just so many on your property because of limited land size, so you'll have to pick and choose, carefully. Go through the first time and look at names you recognize. Then go through again and look at names you don't recognize. Some of those will pique your interest and you might wind up with a yard full of interesting stuff!
