Things are really changing finally here. Pics from an Unknown Coral Bark variety (just a few leaves have turned on this one), Sango Kaku, Butterfly, Ruslyn in the Pink, Autumn Moons, Twombley's Red Sentinel, Peaces and Cream, and Garnet.

Back at the farm, here are some others I've taken recently, A. triflorum (2), A. 'Nicholsonii' (2), A. rufinerve 'Albolimbatum' (2), A. aff. morifolium (perhaps capillipes?) (2), A 'Utsu semi' and A. 'Koto no ito' just beginning. Many of these are more advanced now, I will try to get out tomorrow as there's some sun being promised.

Thank you to everyone who has taken the time to post photos and recommend Acer varieties that are so beautiful, especially in autumn. This is an incredible resource for someone like me who is looking for good choices to plant in my own garden.

Here's a first batch from today in the sunshine. 'Koto no ito' (3), variegated seedling, A. capillipes 'Golden Increase' (2), A. micranthum 'Candelabrum', 'Osakazuki' (more orange than ever seen, if you showed me this picture I'd wonder if it was a real one!), A. triflorum with A. 'Fior d'Arancio' (A. catalpifolium still green on the left), and A. 'Fior d'Arancio'.

My Acer palmatum in the ground is hardly showing any autumn colours, but others are:

    - 2 x Acer griseum, just beginning to change colours
    - 2 x Acer p. 'Momoiro koya-san' (Oct. 20th and today)
    - 2 x Acer p. 'Seiryu' (in the shade and in the morning sun)
    - 2 x Acer discolor. The first photo is from Sept. 4th, growing new leaves after a very hot summer, the second one was taken this morning.

Those are gorgeous Alain. I have a few palmatums that haven't budged at all yet, and of the 4 discolors in the ground here only one has started to change at all. None of them have the healthy dark green yours shows in the last picture, I wonder if I should hit them with some sequestrene next year; that said they're all in the sun, perhaps yours has more shade?

Another batch from yesterday: platanoides selection, looking back at 'Osakazuki' with 'Keikan zan' framed by davidii 'Earnest Wilson', 'Nicholsonii' and 'Shin Chisio' in foreground, A. wilsonii 'Keikan zan' 'Shin chisio' and others, 'Shin chisio' (2). A. pectinatum ssp forrestii (probable hybrid) (2), palmatum selection SF1001G.

This one, and another one were mainly in the shade and were repottedin the spring. I have a third one, in a smaller pot, that was not repotted that is near a wall and that got more sun this summer, and most of the leaves are turning red (too dark now for a photo, I'll post some pics tomorrow).

... and when I repot my trees, I always add some 6-6-6 osmocote, that's probably why the two green ones look healthier.

Went to "Arboretum des Barres" today. Not the best time of the year, nor the best year to go there, a lot of deciduous had already lost their leaves or they were badly scorched.

But I saw a few interesting maples there.

    - The first one is maybe a Norway maple, there was no label. In the background, a building of the "forestry school" that was established there in the 1880s - huge trees, some spectacular Sequoia sempervirens.
    - Acer caesium : I was surprised to see how the shoots at the base of the tree look different.
    - Two Acer cappadocicum, wonderful colours
    - Acer carpinifolium
    - Acer davidii (see how the several trunks are beginning to fuse)

There were others that are totally leafless, I must go back in the spring.

    - Acer hyrcanum : two of the very few leaves that were left
    - an unidentified maple, the leaves look a bit different from the plain A. p. species
    - Acer palmatum palmatum
    - Acer tataricum.var aidzuense.
    - Acer triflorum
    - Acer truncatum

During summer my Maple trees are mostly in the shade, so colours fall are coming in november.
The first to change is 'arakawa', always faithful in colors for 15 years.
'katsura', 8 years after grafting , with maturité the colors are more generous.
Then Acer cappadocicum, one sort of yelow flag at the corner of my worshop window.
Palmatum palmatum are slowly coming but 'seyriu' is still green.

Three "clones" (cuttings) from the same Acer palmatum palmatum. The first one was almost in 100% shade until a few weeks ago when I put it in semi-shade, like the others.

    Thanks ;-)
Bonsai is a good activity when you have a "town garden". This one is about 30 cm tall, and the cutting (2-3 mm summer cutting) was placed on the block of pozzolane about 20 years ago...

Crappy photo. As usual, the garden is a mess, the sky is grey - but not all the leaves are brown. Among others:

Zelkova (deep red), Laurel (dark green), Malus 'Evereste" (yellow) and Metasequoia (light brown-orange).

But what I like is the bright red spot in the bottom left quarter of the picture : Acer griseum.

@AlainK Take good care of those root over rock, I lost mine over a winter that we had long periods below 0F despite lots of protection and being in the garage. My only losses were 3 root over rock out of 40 other bonsai surviving. That rock is a conductor of temperature (both hot and cold) that can drastically impact cold hardiness. Anyway, I know you know and I am stating the obvious. I just can't help myself and say something when I see something so special and beautiful as your bonsai! Keep taking good care of that one because it is magnificent! Keep up the great work! You are a true artist!

Micro climate saves us again! Lake Erie water is 52F at the end of my street causing the air temp in the garden to be 37F with rain.

Just 10 miles south (away from lake) the temperature is 31F SNOW accumulation of 2" and increasing. My wife called to say driving south is like being in a snow globe!

    Luckily no snow here!
