Identification: strange plant from North Carolina

    Found this one plant along a trail off the Blue Ridge Parkway on May 5th (2012). Looks like it may be previous year's growth? Any ideas?

    Usnea strigosa, unusually looking lichen.

    I agree with Tyrlych. We don't have this U. strigosa here is BC, but we do have a couple of apotheciate Usneas.
