Take photos of the undersides of the leaves / shoots as well as the upper sides. Close-up macros showing the presence or absence of hairs on the leaf or shoot can also be important.

Thanks, Michael. I have added that to the text. I was just thinking that today reading one of the recent maple ID postings where the presence of hairs would figure into the ID (but I hadn't thought to update the text).

also make sure you tell us what time of year the photo was taken or when it flowers, as this will help in the process.

I have photos in my gallery of a non-native willow common around here (probably originally from Europe, but maybe North America) that I would like to send to this forum for identification. I know how to click on the photos and email them to someone, and I've been doing that quite a bit, but what actual step(s) do I have to take to pull one or more of them from the gallery and post them here for identification? I am pretty new to the internet and my navigation skills are still at a low-medium level.

I understand you to mean "your gallery" on your computer. Have a look at the video at Attach photos and files and reply with specific questions if that doesn't help. You can practice all you want here: The Test Bed. No-one will reply with answers in the test bed. :)
