Can you identify this plant please?

    I found large stands of this in Port Alberni.
    I believe it to be hog weed, however, locals say it is an indian medicine that does not harm like hog weed.

    The leaves don't look like a hogweed Heracleum. How the locals call it?

    Looks like a Petasites frigidus, probably var. palmatus, or Western Coltsfoot--as you mention, it has a long history of medicinal use amongst coastal First Nations.

    Concur re: Petasites. Here is an example of hogweed leaves, notice how in the young leaves, the leaves are composed of a main terminal leaflet (that looks similar to what you photographed, though glossier and with more jaggedy edges) that is subtended by two smaller leaflets (absent from your photographs).
