Acer amamiense T.Yamaz is anew species from the Ryukyus in Japan. A. amamiense is described from Isl. Amamiohshima, the Ryukyus. This species resembles A. diabolicum Blume, but differs from the latter in having glabrous petioles and under surface of leaves, and fruits covered with sparse short hairs without bristle hairs.
Classified in the endangered species list of Japan. Pictures taken at Tsukuba Botanical Gardens.

    Thanks Gomero.

Have you seen the flowers? I wonder if there is a difference there, as in the closely related diabolicum and sinopurpurescens.

Well, no flowers at this time of the year :), but I did not see any seeds either in the only one planted in the ground (young tree roughly 10 years old). The other pics are from cuttings grown in the conservatory.

The flowers are yellow (both sexes) in A. amamiense.
