A full block of Shirotae in bloom on Highbury between 6th and 7th Avenues. The trees are on the property of a condo and next to the sidewalk. On the boulevard side of the sidewalk, the City has planted Kanzan cherries. Some years the blooming time overlaps and we can walk under a lovely canopy from the two cherries. The Kanzan buds are showing some pink. Maybe this will be one of those years. Stay tuned!

Here are those Shirotae on Highbury between 6th and 7th. The second picture shows the ones on 6th. Doesn't look like this year we'll see the kanzan and shirotae meeting up for a double show.

Bellevue Ave blooms from mid cherry season through to the end. 'Mikuruma-gaeshi' past bloom (next year I'll have to get there on time) and ''Takasago' looking pretty good although also past peak bloom.

'Kanzan' are in bloom on the street and a few 'Shirofugen' are just starting to show some blossoms.

The grove of 'Shiro-fugen' at Spanish Banks East Concession. One is in full bloom and the other 4 are partially in bloom.

There was almost nothing on the map south of 10th in this neighbourhood, so I went looking for 'Kanzan'. I found some, but my favourite find of the day was this large beautiful, probably ungrafted 'Shirotae' in a yard on 13th just east of Wallace. It's past peak bloom.

Here is another 'Shirotae' on 15th east of Tolmie.
    20130423_15thSasamat_Shirotae_Cutler_P1420976.jpg

In the same area, on Sasamat at the corner of 15th is a very tall 'Amanogawa'.
    20130423_Sasamat15th_Amanogawa_Cutler_P1420973.jpg 20130423_Sasamat15th_Amanogawa_Cutler_P1420974.jpg

At the end of 15th at Blanca, looking east, several 'Kanzan' on the block are pretty showy for an area with not many of this tree.
    20130423_15thBlanca_Kanzan_Cutler_P1420980.jpg

The best 'Kanzan' street in the area is for sure 12th between Discovery and Courtenay. The view is beautiful looking both directions from the hill mid-block.

On 12th at Wallace are two 'Kanzan' that were visible three blocks away, as they hang out over the street. I expected to find a block of trees, was amused to see just two. (I was also bemused, but at that point, a friend was driving, so it wasn't such an inconvenience to have gone out of the way to see these)

On 15th between Trimble and Sasamat are four 'Shirofugen', two on private property and two on the boulevard in front of that property. They're just starting to open, should be very nice in another week.

    12th between Courtenay and Discovery, a 'Beni-shidare'

    12th and Crown, a 'Kiku-shidare-zakura'.

Lots of trees to keep track of next year south of 10th. Thanks, Wendy.

One more post of a 'Shiro-fugen' on Crown at 8th.

'Shiro-fugen' at Locarno Beach and then another at the housing complex on 2nd at Wallace. This housing complex across from Jericho beach has 6 'Kanzan', 4 'Somei-Yoshino' or 'Akebono' (not sure which) and this 'Shiro-fugen'.

A happy day at the beach.

Interestingly, we can still see two story cherry flowers with two colors at Locarno Beach.

Some small flowers may be due to malnourished.

What are those green structures in the flower, phylloid or sepals?
    They look like large Kiku-zakura.

Except these 'Shirofugen' flowers would need another 50-75 petals to compete with 'Kiku-zakura'.

All those green things look like phylloid pistils to me.

there are several trees on both sides of Tolmie between Fifth and Fourth Avenues. I think they are Somei-yoshimo but I am very new identifying trees. This is a spectacular setting. This was viewed on March 27,2015

These are 'Akebono', and it's interesting to see how much they have grown since they were last posted in 2009. You can check our map (get to it from http://vcbf.ca/neighbourhood-maps) to see if trees you find have already been identified for you.

Here are some 'Akebono', past their best now, on West 2nd, west of Blanca,
    20160325_20160325_2ndBlanca_Akebono_Cutler_142311.jpg
    on Drummond west of Blanca
    20160325_DrummondBlanca_Akebono_Cutler_142343.jpg 20160325_DrummondBlanca_Akebono_Cutler_143225.jpg 20160325_DrummondBlanca_Akebono_Cutler_142947.jpg

and on Blanca at 2nd, in a private driveway.
    20160325_1875Blanca2nd_Akebono_Cutler_142820.jpg

This 'Yae-beni-shidare' on Drummond west of Blanca is quite large but hard to see, partly obscured by a hedge.
    20160325_4722DrummondBlanca_Yae-beni-shidare_Cutler_143327.jpg 20160325_4722DrummondBlanca_Yae-beni-shidare_Cutler_143427.jpg

Years ago I found three late-blooming trees at 6th and Drummond that I figured had to be 'Shirotae'. Now just one remains, not at all in bloom, while other 'Shirotae' very nearby were past their peak. I still don't believe it can be that cultivar.

Beautiful 'Atsumori' on West 14 Ave, west of Wallace is in full bloom today.
May be the only 'Atsumori' in Vancouver now; on the Easter Parade we noticed the 'Atsumori' on Lagoon Drive , east of Pitch and Putt entrance in Stanley Park is 'gone'.

Big new find today - a whole block of big old avium 'Plena' form an arch over West 11th between Wallace and Highbury. They are past their prime, but were still very exciting to see. The blossom photo is a little over-zoomed for the quality, but you can see the leaf margins, similar to the single Prunus avium, not serrated. I'm not sure how you describe that uneven scalloping.

This solo Ama-no-gawa is blooming nicely as its branches stretch up to look over Spanish Banks at the back of the public accessible Royal Vancouver Yacht Club parking lot by the bike racks. The flowers tilt skyward so it was difficult to get a good photo but with the help of digital zoom (and perhaps some screen zoom), the identifying characteristics are visible.
