    Hi there,

My husband got me this small potted plant with trumpet shaped flowers, and I'd like to know what it is and how to care for it. Anybody have any ideas?

It is 5" tall (from soil to top of flowers) and 9" across (leaf tip to leaf tip), and the flowers are about 2-3" long and wide.

The leaves and stems are covered with a soft velvety hair texture.

The flowers are all one part until they reach the tips, where they break into 6 distinct petals.

    Thanks for your help!

Gloxinia--I had not seen speckled ones before. Nice.

Ah, thank you! Looks like the speckled ones are Tigrina Gloxinia. Glad I asked for advice because I was spraying water directly onto the plant, which apparently can cause spotting on the leaves and flowers.

The genus name is Sinningia, if you don't know already. It will have a large tuber under the soil. It will go dormant for part of the year - so don't think it has died. When it goes dormant, don't water, or at least very little, and wait for it to come back to life. It's a very pretty one.
