Albizia julibrissin: New question + photos

I'm interested to know if there's anyone in the PNW who is successfully growing Albizia julibrissin. I grew up calling this a mimosa tree. I just planted one, and I'd like to know if this will be a hard mountain to climb.

Seen repeatedly in cities here, often stocked by independent retail outlets. Wants a warm location, is apt to die back on the inside of the crown, so that you have dead smaller branches all through the interior even though the outer shell remains covered with leaves. Ordinary forms pale and less satisfying in flower, more hardy Korean introduction 'Rosea' more strongly colored as well.

I just noticed this today:

Is it sick? Is it doomed? Is this the dreaded fusarium wilt?

It's about 6' tall and has been planted for about 3 months. The closer to the top, the more black I see......

If it dies back it may keep going from below the dead part. Might be having problems with the poor spring weather this year.

 

There's new growth all the way up. Should I cut it back below the black or leave it alone?

I'd wait and see if it gets worse before amputating.

 

We have had a Albizia julibrissin for about 17 yrs. now and it has a trunk on it about 1 Ft in diameter. We keep it pruned as it would be too large. We usually do this in spring when we see where the new growth is going to come from. Every year the branches from the previous year need to be pruned back to new growth. Seems to be different each year (winter, etc.?).
