Here's my Shindeshojo grown here in Los Angeles, California. This pic was taken Oct. 5, 2005. Despite the scorching heat, it has set out new leaves.

 

hello sam,

i was looking at the pictures of your shin deshojo and was wondering how accurately the camera captured the color on the second image. are there truely mauve or lavender areas along with the green.

i'm posting a couple of mine from this year. the first is an image from july, when it finally began to leaf out, and the second from october. it's been struggling a little this year as i try to learn what conditions it prefers.

although my colors are very close to reality, i have to admit that my camera tends to add vibrancy to reds.

This is my first Shindeshojo in Spring, but you can tell the color is not red but light pink. Is it because it doesn't has enough sun? (I placed it in my garage thru the whole winter).

 

If it began leafing out in the garage that would be the cause. These trees require some direct sunlight to show their coloration.

 

Im having an issue with my leaves sagging at the ends, (almost curling under). The tree is sproting lots of new red growth and I am watering it once a week letting it dry out slightly before watering. Does anyone know what is happening or if this is a problem? If it is a problem how do I correct it? The leafs were nices and strait when I first got the tree but this is my first summer season with this tree. Its hard to see in the attached photo but the curling has become more pronounced since I took this pic. Any reccomendations are appreciated. Thanks

 

It is probably a foliage fungal disease. I have had this occur occasionally and have treated with a fungicide which seems to have cured the problem. The leaves that are damaged will remain this way, but new leaves should be normal.

 

Hanl, 'Shindeshojo' here is also more of a pink than red, holding that colour for about 5 weeks last year ,maybe temperature related with the cool spring or lack of sun as mattlwfowler mentioned. Your tree looks very vigorous so wondering if it could be a different clone, overfertilized, or from reaching for the light in the garage, guessing it's heated. Actually the one here looks more like a pink flowering tree from a distance and can be susceptible to wet snow damage if not pruned some.

Shindeshojo is probably my favorite JM. It has a nice natural form and the color is incredibly intense in spring. Then it gradually turns green, and turn brilliant red again in fall.

This is about 30 years old Shindeshojo, which I purchased and planted about 20 years ago. It is now about 15 feet tall and 12 feet wide.

Had these pics in another thread and thought i might as well move them here. About 25 years old this tree gets sun from mid day to late afternoon in a generally cool wet spring climate. Another tree grown in nearly full light has the intense red spring leaves already shown in others photos here. This one has had quite a bit of pruning over the years, and needs more, as it tends to get some twiggy and weak growth and can be susceptible to wet winter snow damage here at times. Haven't noticed any seed yet. First two pics are in mid May and next two are early November.

 

Saw this today... thought the two toned effect was very interesting. Is this common?

 

The tree I grow has the same 2-tone action right now.
