This one is having a bit of a tough time this year since it was freshly dug up this last winter. It was a "mother tree" for several decades before I bought it this last winter. it will be fun to watch it come back.

Saw a large and old example of 'Shishigashira' the other day at Batsford Arboretum. It looks to be approximately 28 feet high, and was likely planted in the period between 1890 and 1900 when the original garden was developed on the site.

Another old 'Shishigashira' at Batsford. The form of the trunk and branches near the base of this tree reminds me of Henry Moore's style of abstract sculpture.

    Hello all,
It's that time of year again when I suffer from maple madness, so I thought I post a few photos of my Shishigashira now that it's starting to come along very nicely.

I can only speak for mine but it seems to be tougher than some of the others I own, it gets lots of sun a fair bit of wind and is in less than perfect Somerset soil yet came through last winter unscathed and is doing well.
I can't wait for it to start changing colour in the next couple of months.

Me too, thanks for the feedback,I think our climates should be similar:)it somehow looks and feels a hardy type.Lovely tree you've got there.Ever had any dealings with Barthelemy Maples?..seems to be one of the very few propagators around here.

I've got one 7' Shishigashira and a much younger one that's about 3' tall. I've had both for 5+ years and find them both to be slow growers, neither has experienced much if any die-back, hardy (the big one was partially eaten by deer and suffered no negative consequences), and frankly both are just plain beautiful year round. Like everyone else on this site, I am mostly smitten by the growth habit ... it's pretty unusual with JMs, and I like the fact that this is a tidy, neat, compact cultivar. Last year my seven footer exhibited the most beautiful yellow-gold color, it took one's breath away. I tried to post a photo of it, but my megapixels were too much for the site, so it was rejected, even when I cropped the photo. I'll try again this fall.

Barthelemy's is only about half an hour from me Houzi, and I've had quite a few trees from them including a couple of Shishigashira. Makes for quite nice companion trees with Kotohime and Okushimo.

I've also found them friendly and knowledgeable, and I don't think I've ever had any problems with their trees, which I can't say for the chain nurseries. Plenty of the cheapest trees are already pretty sizeable for a £10 graft but I like the second size up at £25 or so - most would run you £50 at a non-specialist nursery. Some nice bigger trees too, and the parent plants on site are very nice.

They have some of the more uncommon cultivars there too, I picked up a nice Sagara nishiki last time out. Don't know what the mail order's like, I've always picked them out (and up) in person.

If you do go that route and like Shishigashira, there are a couple of very well sized specimens at nearby Hillier's Arboretum.

Ah Carrera, thankyou for your recommendation. It's funny, they never show up on a web search because their catalogue has to be downloaded I assume,I only stumbled across them searching for rootstock. It's quite a distance from me so I think it'd have to be the mail order route(lack of space in car)It would be good to get the plants from source for a change and the small grafts they sell look an economical way to build a collection. However you've made the larger plants sound very tempting...hmm
You're another one with a couple of Shishigashiras,it must be a special plant, and yes I must make the effort to visit arboretums this year, keep promising myself but somehow....:)

Sorry to interrupt the discussion with my problem, but the subject is my shishigashira. I have only discovered a disease had come upon it when I pulled away some dry stripes of bark. I'm sure this disease was discussed somewhere in the forum. Is there a better option than trying to airlayer the 2 main branches? You can see in this video

    Thanks

This tree is appreciated by most visitors any time of the year.

Here is one of my favorites and it happens to be one of my largest bonsai. Created 3 years ago from a 7 gallon nursery container, roots mass reduced and canopy reduced 1/3 of its original size. This tree keeps getting better with age. Its not my first choice in pot selection, but it was the only pot I could find on hand that was large enough to work.

Very nice Jti,I like how the bunching of the foliage gives the impression of a full size tree with full canopy with more branching than it actually has,if you know what I mean.
Mine's still recovering from the darkness on the stem,I've experimented with a couple of chemicals...it's still going so we'll see.

A very nice tree you've got here, 'Shishigashira' is not that easy to make a convincing bonsai.

(I would use a shallower pot, a bit wider and oval maybe ;-) )

Beautiful bonsai. I guess mine is a big bonsai - lol. This Shishi is 20 years old and I've kept it at 6'. I saw an earlier posting I made in 2006 and the Shishi isn't much bigger now then it was 8 years ago.

Gorgeous tree Sam! JT, lovely bonsai. I have a few maples I'm contemplating using for bonsai, but for the moment I'm content to let them grow...

I have a nice little Shishigashira that is going into the ground in a few days. He's a small guy only about 3' tall at the moment. I saw one at the nursery that was much larger (but with a larger price tag) and had to have one. They are my favorite maple at the moment. I've enjoyed all the photos of your shishis.

Did a bit of mulching around my Shishigashira yesterday, so thought I'd pop up a quick pic!
