I was in a friend's garden (in the Pacific Northwest), she has two plants with no id.

The first is a shrub, it is about 6 feet tall and reminds me of a rock rose.

The second is a ground cover.

    Any ideas?

First is a mallow, second a saxifrage.

That really looks like it, especially the leaves.

That is what I thought too - the leaves (none of the other Lavatera I saw have this leaf shape); there are several named cv's for L. x clementii one of which is likely to be your plant. Thanks Michael for pointing in the right direction.

Thanks everyone! It is supposedly semi-evergreen, which would be nice.
