My landscaper planted this plant 2 years ago and finally this year it has taken off. I have tried numerous apps and sites to identify what it is - It grows about 4 feet tall, has a red stalk like a rhubarb family plant. It is very hardy and is doing excellent despite 100 degree temperatures. I have attached pictures. Thank you!
Looks like an amaranth, but amaranth is generally just an annual. Could survive as a short lived perennial in Texas I suppose. Could be growing annually from seed. They seed quite readily.
I agree with Eric, these would not have survived our 70+hr. freeze last January at 16F (-9c) without supplemental heat.
That certainly looks like what it is! Thanks for your help! Very interesting history as a dye (Hopi Indian tribe) and food source in many regions of the world. (oh yes, and as a weed that farmers detest!). I like the ornamental quality! Thanks again!
