I recently moved into an older house. Early this spring while there was still snow around this plant started coming up in the flower garden. Now that it's flowering it should be easy to identify but I haven't been able to so far. I'm sure it's something pretty common - but I'm not a "flower" person - so I'm wondering if someone here can supply the name?

Thank you! I thought of tulip but the flower shape didn't seem right, too short compared to traditional pictures I remembered seeing. Anyways, thank you again!

Definitely a tulip. This is an older tulip cultivar. My mother used to grow this exact one.
Tulips vary in height depending on species (I have some which grow only 6 inches high) and cultivars, also light and soil conditions to some extent.
