We have 8 large 80yr old maples, and one of them appears to be being eaten by something. last season it began to look pale and had little holes in the leaves like bite marks. These also appeared on the lilac bush near by. This season it has many beautiful dark leaves (although some of the top branches have died off completely) but the leaves have bite marks again. I have also noticed a ring in the grass around the base of the tree where the grass appears darker with dead patches. You can see from my photos that the ring is now around the neighboring tree as well, but no others yet. Can anyone identify this problem? It would be a shame to loose any of these great trees.
That was my thought also, but sounds like something else is going on with the trees; pictures of some of the affected leaves might help.
