Last year there was a similar thread, I thought it would be fun to see what was new for everyone this year.

Have you seen any variegation on your Sonia Marie? So far mine almost looks like Aureum Full Moon...

It still has not leafed out. As it goes, I have not read anything about the tree so it is a complete mystery tree. The one I have is pretty large, about 6' tall. It has staky branching which i can not say is really attractive. I will post a photo of it later today to show its structure.

    K4,
My Sonia Marie is just like yours - no variegation and similar to shir. Aureum but my Sonia is much lighter (almost
whitish) than Aureum. I like it very much. Slow grower like Aureum too.

    amazing maples,
Some wonderful choices there (and also K4 as well!!!).
Let me know if your Taimin nishiki really variegates. I am determined in 2011 to get 3 of the newer variegates
but only if they really show variegation - Taimin nishiki, Hinode nishiki and Fujanami nishiki. I have the latter 2
from reputable nurseries BUT no variegation.
I give my Burgundy Jewel full sun into the later afternoon to really get those red hues and bring out the jewels.
You had a picture of Shiro in the photo section which looks more orangish than my new one which has new greenish
yellow growth with some orangish blushing on the tips. What sun/shade conditions is your Shiro in please?

My boyfriend is AMAZING and braved the parking lot nightmare at the Portland Japanese Gardens annual plant sale today while I was working...

And he brought me back (after telling me that he turned around and didn't go!):

'Baby Ghost' - beautiful, beautiful little tree (from eastfork)
Acer circinatum, Vine Maple, ‘Little Gem’ - looks fun! (from Arbutus)
Acer shirasawanum ‘Kawaii’- gorgeous leaves (from eastfork)
'Sagara Nishiki' - really excited to see how this one colors up (from Arbutus)

Thank you to all the wonderful plant/maple people that really impressed him with your kindness and enthusiasm!

lastb year my shiro was in mostly shade, the tree was ok for color, I just look at it as just another tree with nothing that special. I find ukigumo or murakumo are more interestng for the kind of location you would plant the tree. Everyone has their own likes and i am sure there are pleanty out there who see it different.

The Sonya Marie came from Buchholz as do most of my trees. Since june of last year, I have bought 273 trees from them. 40 or so of them are evergreens. This last year was fun since many of them were 45 gallons and larger. It has been a challenge finding/making space for them. Luckly some people have come and taken a few of them to their own home.

So far my Taimen nishiki looks like a red tree, my guess is it is similar to most all of the red/red variegates.

I still like the Hana matoi for the pink/red variegation, even in full sun (granted PNW full sun) today may have been the first full sun day for 2011

I wish I knew about that sale, I'll have to watch for it next year. It may be worth the drive from Eugene.

A.s. Kawaii is near the top of my list, and while I try to buy everything direct ( I really like to visually inspect a plant before purchasing it) instead of via the internet, I may need to order one from Eastfork, as I haven't seen any local vendors.

I grow thousands from seed and love to see what I get. A new cultivar maybe. I also opened a nursery to sell japanese maples etc. in Canada. I love selling online to japanese enthusiasts and always throw in freebee ones that i grow from seed. '

Kaitain4, I see that you picked up a maple I've desperately been trying to find (and having VERY little luck) - a little Shin hikasa! Please, oh please, share with me where you were able to find it! :) I'm finally starting my own maple collection after many years of loving them, and would love to add one of these to my (growing) collection!
