Playing catch-up here. I took these Shirofugen photos on May 7, on West 24th west of Highbury. There's a whole block of them, and they'll still look nice for at least a couple of weeks.

I think these Kanzans are on 18th west of Highbury, but if I find out differently, I'll correct the location. Edited - they are either east of Highbury or west of Crown.

I haven't posted my pictures of Amanogawa & might-be Mikurumagaesi.

On May 4, I walked on Highbury from 41st to 33rd, then Wallace to 16th.
I found 2 cherry trees which mught be Mikurumagaeshi.
But it was a bit too late to identify Mikurumagaeshi.
So I'm not sure but I post here for the next season.

    Mikurumagaeshi? on Highbury between 38 & 37th
Size of the flower is very big like Mikurumagaeshi, but I couldn't find double flowers.

    Mikurumagaeshi? at Wallace & 20th
On this tree I could find double flowers. [edited by wcutler 20090720: Mariko has posted this in Cultivar IDs as an unknown, thinking that it's different from Mikuruma-gaeshi]
    20080504_Wallas&20th_Mikurumagaeshi_Izaki 1002.JPG 20080504_Wallas&20th_Mikurumagaeshi_Izaki 1003.JPG 20080504_Wallas&20th_Mikurumagaeshi_Izaki 1006.JPG

Amanogawa in the garden of a house on Highbury between 33 &32
They were pruned and made short to see flowers from ground.
(I have seen some grown-up ones which have flowers only very high part and
people can see flowers only from second floor. )
Amanogawa must be a very strong tree.

    Re: Dunbar-Southlands -- Fall Colours

Young Akebonos on 37th between highbury & Wallace on October 22

Kanzan near-by hasn't changed so much, but some Young Akebono on 37th between Highbury and Wallace have started to change.
Trees on north side have changed more than trees on south side.

Akebonos started to be beautiful in our neighbourhood now.
They are about 50% bloom on 39th between Dunbar to Blenheim.(south side only)

They are same condition on 42nd Between Collingwood and Blenheim &
on Wallace between 41st to 39th.
Young Akebonos on 37th between Wallace to Olympic are just a bit behind.
    20090412_39th&Collingwood_Akebono&plum_Izaki 007.jpg 20090412_39th&Collingwood_Akebono&plum_Izaki 008.jpg 20090412_39th&Collingwood_Akebono&plum_Izaki 010.jpg

The isolated Somei-Yoshino on at the corner of 38th and Collingwood is fully bloom now. (I noticed this Somei-Yoshino was grafted one!!)
It is way ahead of Akebonos on the same street.
    20090411_38th&collingwood_Akebono&SomeiYoshino_Izaki 001.jpg 20090411_38th&collingwood_Akebono&SomeiYoshino_Izaki 005.jpg

This year I recognized the tree at the corner of 37th and Collingwood was Stellata.
It also is an isolated tree.
    20090411_37th&collingwood_Stellata,Akebono&Rancho_Izaki 002.jpg 20090411_37th&collingwood_Stellata,Akebono&Rancho_Izaki 003.jpg

But I found 2 whitcombs in miserable shape and 2 young Rancho trees on the other side of the street (38th between Collingwood and Blenheim)
    20090411_37th&collingwood_Stellata,Akebono&Rancho_Izaki 014.jpg 20090411_37th&collingwood_Stellata,Akebono&Rancho_Izaki 010.jpg 20090411_37th&collingwood_Stellata,Akebono&Rancho_Izaki 017.jpg

But whitcombs in our neighbourhood are almost finishing now.
(I missed them in full bloom this year. They didn't open so much for long time and I couldn't come for a week then they almost finished now!)

    . April 16
Festival Favourite Tai-Haku on Blenheim between 38 and 40 started blooming.

Now they are 20 to 40 % blooming.
Flowers here aren't as big as one on Granville St. near 1st street.
But there are 10 Tai-Haku in a row and some of them are very good shape.
    20090416_Blenheim&38th_Taihaku&TakasagoIzaki 001.jpg 20090416_Blenheim&38th_Taihaku&TakasagoIzaki 003.jpg 20090416_Blenheim&38th_Taihaku&TakasagoIzaki 010.jpg

There are a row of Tai-Haku on one side and Akebono on the other side on 39th between Dunbar and Collingwood.
Takasago on 38th have started to bloom.
But I visited there after 6 PM and it was cloudy, I couldn't take beautiful color of them.
    So next Fine Day!

    I found 2 new Rancho ( ?) on Blenheim near 38th.
They have only a few flowers but they were so beautiful.
( I felt too beautiful to be Rancho. I'll go and check on fine day.)

There is a solo Somei-Yoshino at the private back garden of the house at the north-east corner of Dunbar and 35th. It wasn't grafted. It looks older than Cambie ones.
    (Pictures taken on April 14)

Wallace St. between 39 to 41st is very beautiful with Akebonos now.
There is 1 Yae-Beni-Shidare at a private Garden about middle of the street.
They are getting Beautiful now.(picture taken on April 12)

It was very beautiful day today(April 28). Many kind of Double cherry were beautiful now.
There are 5 Ichiyos (I think so) on 43rd between Collingwood & Blenheim.
They are blooming now. There are some Kanzans on the other side of the street.

There is 1 Amanogawa in a private garden at the corner of Olympic & 41st.
    It Started to bloom, too.

Kanzans are beautiful Everywhere, also in Dunbar area.
Olympic between 41 and SW Marine Dr.

On Dunbar between 41 & SW Marine Dr. (old and some are not good condition) also between 16 and King Edward.

There is a very unique and tiny single cherry (smaller than 1 cent coin) is blooming on 37th between Wallace & Highbury. Ron said it was a rootstock cherry without a name.

Well, here it is the new year already, and these four Autumnalis Rosea trees I'd never seen before are prominently in bloom. I just included the street sign to prove that they really are at the corner of SW Marine Dr and SW Marine Dr. It's one block east of Dunbar.

I'm not so impressed with my Kullahun photos this year, but I need them posted for the VCBF website. They were at peak bloom on Monday. OMG, that was only yesterday. So they're still in peak bloom.

Here is a trio of 'Ukon' on Highbury at 31st.
    20100407_Highbury31st_Ukon_Cutler_P1000107.jpg 20100407_Highbury31st_Ukon_Cutler_P1000104.jpg

We were collecting information about cherries in parks and I don't think we had these trees listed on the 31st Ave side of Dunbar Community Centre. They're way past being in bloom, but just for the record, there are two of them, whatever they are. I'd have guessed 'Somei-yoshino' except the flowers are on corymbs, not umbels, and there seem to be too many blossoms still hanging around. Not the right leaf margins for 'Umineko' or yamazakura or our hill cherries. And our hill cherries had short hairless pedicels and not visible peduncles, whereas these are long pedicels with hairs (if the blossoms I could get close to off the trunk are the same, but they don't look like rootstock growth). Am I forgetting something I'm supposed to know? Well, next year.

The fourteen 'Shirofugen' on the block of 24th west of Highbury are past their prime now. You can see more photos in posting #35 from last year.

I had just a moment in very bad light to step out of the car and get this fantastic group on a pricey corner lot directly across from the Pt Grey Golf Club entrance gate.

I'm not too good on cultivars, I think they might be Somei-Yoshino.

Edited to add: No, Wendy says they are Akebono.

I went to this area to see the Festival Favourite 'Takasago' trees on 38th at Highbury. I'm not so fond of this cultivar when the blossoms have all opened, but when there are still a lot of buds, I find them irresistible. Sort-of. I have to focus very closely on the blossoms and not let my eye wander onto the sad state of the trees, though these look better than a lot of others around town.
    20110417_38thWallace_Takasago_Cutler_P1100099.jpg 20110417_38thWallace_Takasago_Cutler_P1100102.jpg 20110417_38thWallace_Takasago_Cutler_P1100106.jpg 20110417_38thWallace_Takasago_Cutler_P1100107.jpg

37th east of Wallace is a nice street of young 'Akebono'. On the NW corner is quite a large 'Shirotae' in a yard.
    20110417_37thWallace_Akebono_Cutler_P1100095.jpg 20110417_37thWallace_Shirotae_Cutler_P1100096.jpg

On the east side of Wallace from 39th to 41st is a row of old 'Akebono'. I can't really tell by the tree shape - by that I'd have guessed 'Somei-yoshino' for these, but the petals seem larger and that does seem to be a staminode in that fuzzy last photo.

Here's an 'Akebono' across from a friend's place in the lane just north of 18th a block east of Collingwood.
    20110417_18thBlenheim_Akebono_Cutler_P1100062.jpg 20110417_18thBlenheim_Akebono_Cutler_P1100063.jpg

On Highbury looking north from 19th is a row of 'Akebono' on the east side of the street. On 19th looking east from Highbury are at least two old 'Akebono'.
    20110417_Highbury19th_Akebono_Cutler_P1100076.jpg 20110417_19thHighbury_Akebono_Cutler_P1100077.jpg 20110417_19thHighbury_Akebono_Cutler_P1100078.jpg

At 24th and Highbury is this lone 'Takasago' completely ignored by my reluctant-cherry-scout friend who lives on the block. In the last photo, I was making sure there were hairs on the petioles, though I didn't really doubt the ID of this tree.
    20110417_24thHighbury_Takasago_Cutler_P1100080.jpg 20110417_24thHighbury_Takasago_Cutler_P1100081.jpg 20110417_24thHighbury_Takasago_Cutler_P1100086.jpg

In plane tree country on 26th at Highbury is a lone 'Shirotae' street tree on the NW corner. Surely the city didn't mistake the 'Shirotae' for a plane tree. Owners have been known to do some guerrilla planting on the boulevards, so maybe that's what happened here?

Fortunately, cherry blossoms have still bloomed, although plums have already fallen :)
Here is "Takasago". The location is "West 38th Wallace to Blenheim".
