Hello I have very young cherry tree it is about 6-7 feet tall and I have no clue about pruning it or when to prune it, can anyone help please? I live in Ontario Canada. Thanks
Or not at all. See comments in this thread: http://www.botanicalgarden.ubc.ca/forums/showthread.php?t=64499
Poster may be asking about orchard cherry. However, if not familiar with pruning and training these in a particular orchard style probably best to mostly leave it alone as well.
Freezing to -12. Around -14 cuts tend to shatter instead of slice. Above zero and diseases may spread, particularly in wet conditions. Winter cuts tend to envigorate, and summer cuts don't. There are reasons for summer prunning, but I like to avoid it when I can. One exception is delayed-heading of the leader on new trees which may have a similar effect to what is explained under the "vogel" and "zahn" systems in the following article. Click on the article "Replanting Cherries in British Colombia". It is actually an excelent prunning guide. It explains the main training systems as well a bit of physiology; the what and the why! http://www.agf.gov.bc.ca/treefrt/product/production.htm
