Compost with no leaves

    Hey everyone,
    I am just starting my backyard composter.. as it is the middle of summer, i don't have any leaves to put in it. i have access to a large amount of grass clippings (no fertilizer). help!

    Use the grass clippings instead - what the leaves provide is air pockets, and the grass will do the same.

    Just be sure to mix the grass in well, as it has a tendency to compact into a big wad that won't break down as quickly. Green grass will also be more of a nitrogen source than dry brown leaves (carbon source). If you have shredded newspaper, that can help add in some carbon, but it can compact as well if you don't mix it well.
