I have some broccoli plants that have overwintered, and are, frankly, enormous. Just recently, I've started seeing some florets growing from the crotch of many leaves on some of the larger plants, but no sign of a main head coming from the top of the stalk.

Is this the normal growth progression, or am I unlikely to see the main head, and should just concentrate on harvesting the smaller side bunches?

Harvest the side bits. I think that the winter was too harsh for the expected crown. That tissue may have suffered and the best the plant can do is provide florets from leaf axils lower down.

Nuts. The side ones are much smaller than I'd like, especially for how big the plants are. Thanks for the response.
