Some 30 years ago, my parents had what they called a "winter pear". They picked the fruit very late in the year - very late fall or early winter. The pears were sweet, but with a delightfully crunchy texture. Sadly, the tree is long gone now.

Does anyone know of a variety of pear like this? I've done lots of searching, but can't seem to locate anything which is really crunchy when ripe. But if I find it, I think I'd like to buy it.

Bosc pears are very crunchy and sweet when ripe. This type does well in BC. Personally, I find the flavor too sweet. It lacks any tartness. It tastes something like a very sweet Asian pear.

That's true, Bosc pears have crispness, but no flavour (at least not the ones from the grocery store). The ones I remember as "winter pears" were very flavourful, had a shape & colour more like a Bartlett, not like a Bosc.
