This is the strangest tree I have ever seen. I was in a hurry leaving the Waimea Audubon Botanical Garden in Hawaii and took a few pictures of it together with a sign. To my disappointment the sign doesn't tell you the identity but rather the origin, which is from Canary Islands and Bermuda. The fruit is like a melon and bear some resemblance to a cantaloupe in size and colour. This is apparently facing extinction. The specimen is about 12-15 meters high. What is it?

This tree is most definitely not native to Bermuda, nor is it even grown in Bermuda.

In Trinidad and some of the countries of northeastern South America they tell you not to stand under the tree since it is commonly called the Cannon ball tree! One of my friends from Trinidad says "don't get near it!" There is one at the Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden in Miami, FL but I don't think it has produced sizeable fruit which cannot be eaten. The grounds keepers pollinate it by hand.

The flowers are beautiful but the fruit hurts!
