There are probably thousands on Ginkgo's in my city. That is a shape I've not seen. That tree has lots of presence.
One of the oldest ginkgo tree in Europe is "Adam" was planted in 1777 in Daruvar - Croatia. More fotos - Ginkgo biloba - Croatia - Daruvar 1777
Holy Gymnosperm! Unbelievable. Gingkos around here are small and single-trunked...WOW. What a beautiful tree. Magnificent. Thanks for the photos, o1 11. How is it that the planting date is known so accurately? And, who planted it? One wonders.
The oldest tree in Europe are located in the Netherlands (Utrecht - c. 1730, or 1767?), Belgium (Geetbets - 1730), UK (Kew Gardens - 1762), France (Anduze - c. 1750 + 4 trees: 1 in Paris - c. 1780, 2 trees in Montpallier - 1788 and 1795 and Nancy - 1758), Germany (very old ist in Harbke - 1781). Austria's oldest ginkgo has been planted in 1781 in Salzburg. In addition to these plants in Europe have very few trees from the 18 c. Croatian oldest ginkgo planted next to the castle of Count Jankovic in Daruvar. Seedlings imported from Austria. (Reference: B. Begovic: "Svijet ginka" ("Ginkgo world"), 2009 - ginkgo-world.blogspot.com)
If records are made, and kept, as long as they weren't destroyed over the years, we can have records of history. These trees would have been rare back then, so to get one, you would have to have had money. I would guess that whoever planted the Ginkgos all those years ago were botanists of some type, and probably high-ranking in some form, so the records got kept.
What a beautiful tree! Its amazing that they can surpass many of our generations. They live in a different time.
You may be wrong about the amount of older trees ginkgo in Europe? There's not many! Ginkgo biloba - Daruvar - Croatia (1777) - Detail tree!
The tree is a male according to Cor Kwant's "The Ginkgo Pages" site www.xs4all.nl/~kwanten/ . Very interesting, comprehensive, and some amazing photos of 1000+ year old trees. Thanks again for bringing up these trees 01 11 1962.
