Wonder if anyone can help me identifying a shrub.

The leaves start out red/purple and mature green before turning bright red and dropping for the winter. The leaves on this shrub are very similar to the leaves on my smoke bush however they are larger and there is no smoke!.

Note: in the pic the plant in question is the one right next to the stone pillar, sorry for the poor quality I should have taken more pics last summer.

    Thanks

The shoots may be too young to flower and there are various cultivars of Cotinus.

thanks, I thought it might be a cultivar of my cotinus coggygria but wasnt sure due to the lack of blooms, I guess I will just have to wait until the 'smoke' comes.

Most cv's in Ca (and there are many) are a variant of Cotinus coggygria.

it definately looks like a variety of cotinus. the larger leaf size could be due to pruning. hard pruning will usually result in larger leaf size and delay in flowering. I saw a beautiful gold form of cotinus last summer.
