Thank you so much! Would you also be able to tell me the common names of the plants and whether you know if they are poisonous to dogs or not?
1. Dracaena cincta aka dracaena 2. Codiaeum variegatum aka croton 3. Ardisia sp. ? dunno 4. Chamaedorea sp. aka parlor palm 5. Hedera helix aka ivy 6. Cordyline australis ? aka ti plant. this one might also be another type of dracaena (there are many) 7. Selaginella sp. dunno 8. Radermachera sinica aka china doll
the china doll needs to be separated from the other plant - if it's a dracaena rather than cordyline, the water needs are different. same with the poinsettia - different needs, so should be repotted.
Ardisia = Coralberry or Marlberry (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ardisia) Selaginella = Spikemoss (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Selaginella)
thanks, andrey and kim!!! hehe, didn't know the real name for coralberry!! i'd completely forgotten to post a link to the aspca site!!
Thank you all so much! I absolutely love my plants...I've had most of them for years. Unfortunately, last night my husband and I came home to our very ill dog who spent the few hours we were out to eat munching on my Peace Lily. He vomited in nine different places throughout the house, which according to our vet, was a huge blessing since the plant is toxic to dogs. He has never gone near the plant in the six years we've had him, but there has been some acting out the past few months since we brought our newborn son home from the hospital. Anyway, I'm disappointed to have discovered that nearly all of my plants are toxic to my dog. The only two I'm pretty sure are safe include Selaginella and the Parlor Palm. I can't seem to find any information on whether the China Doll is toxic to dogs...I'm hoping not because it looks like such a beautiful plant. Sadly, I'm giving all of my beloved toxic plants to my mother and father-in-law. Can anyone tell me if the China Doll is non-toxic to dogs? I would really love to keep it! Thanks again for your help!
China Doll is supposedly a toxic plant. My understanding is that with a lot of "toxic" plants, the amount an animal would need to ingest in order to cause much harm is pretty high. However, I am in NO WAY knowledgeable enough on the subject to suggest that people do or don't keep certain plants around pets. I have gotten pretty clever with the placement of all my plants in order to keep them from my pets. But my dog is just a little 6-pounder, so it's pretty easy to keep her out of things. Good luck! Hope you get to hang on to some of your favorites :)
