  1. Location: Bruce Peninsula (Cabot head)
a low plant sprawling onto the path. branches up to a foot long.
leaves 6+ cm long, 1.25 cm wide, thin, a lighter green on the bottom
a few teeth above the centreline of the leaf, small, serrate and gland-tipped
reddish-purple shiny ridged slender twig with a few small warts (same colour).
buds round, dull dark brown, several scales, sometimes bud is solitary and sometimes three (middle one smaller). Older bark developing a thin grayish coating.

this plant keys to daphne or spirea but I don't think these plants sprawl. I say three or four plants "sprawling" so i don't think the plant was injured although it is possible that because they were beside a path they had been cut down and sprouted outwards from the base.

except for the buds i would say some type of willow (the leaves have the reticulation of a willow)

I probably am missing something quite obvious but anyway thanks. I am going to try to attach a picture.

I now believe that this shrub is Prunus pumila var. depressa (sandcherry).
I will have to check the fruit/flowers in 2006.
