hello I am also the lucky owner of a royal poinciana! I was on hollidays in Dominique Republic easter 2007 and brought home one of these long seedpods! I scubed one of the seeds with sandpaper and potted it and forgot about it for a long while! Then suddenly I got this funny plant with very big leafs. Now its two years old 70 cm high and still getting beautyful big leafs with 13 sets of small petals. I have seached for information about this plant/ tree for a long time, and then found your conversation.I keep my plant indoor water regular not to much, and it seams to be ok. When the leafs are ca 1 month old they fall, but new ones are comming all the time.I have repotted a couple pf times, the roots are not that big, around one 1 dm3.

Welcome to the thread Jojaq its good to hear your Delonix or Framboyan or whatever else we are going to call them is doing so well.

I agree with Lorax at my height I am certainly not a Gnome. I'll run with your club name Beth!

Which reminds me have you found your camera yet, I seem to recall a promise of some fotos no?

I have been far away to offend anybody with 'Duende'. The Royal Spanish Diccionary says about 'duende':

    <--- Diccionario RAE --->

    duende.

    Matthias,

I'm sure noone was offended its just that in Spanish Duende deosnt just mean fairy it can mean Goblin or a little short spirit like creature depending on which Spanish speaking country you live in. like many words in Spanish they mean different things in different countries for example Guapa in Mexico means pretty or good looking but in the Dominican Republic it means to be very angry just to give you one example.

I wasnt offended but not to keen to be associated with a Goblin or fairy for that matter which can have other connotations.

Vamos a ver.

    Un saludo!

    Nath

I had to pay the excess on the insurance so it has cost me £180 UK so far. In this country there isnt any justice I'm afraid the criminal rules supreme and has the law on his side. You can't even defend yourself anymore or your property. I heard on the radio the other day this guy was sent to jail for defending his wife and kids from a gang of bullies. He now has a criminal record.

Si, claro que tengo el libro <Who Lifted the Lorax>!

They grow well in zones 10 and 11. Anything lower than that, you're risking it. They also need a dry spell. Here in Florida, our winters are dry. That allows the tree to go through its cycle or going "dormant" then flowering.

Rest period? Really? I grow them in the upper Amazon basin, and we have a marked lack of dry spells, just days where it doesn't rain as much. My largest Framboyan is about 5 meters tall and I have yet to see it go dormant. Certainly, they behave that way on the coast, but it doesn't seem to be a requisite...

Not required, per se, but it usually seems to help mine when blossoming...the blossoms come in fuller, and seem to be brighter. That's just MY experience...

I've never seen them go dormant in Spain or Mexico either. They never seem to have any trouble flowering as a result. My largest one is now about a metre tall and has shed its very lowest branches and made some nicenew ones at the top of the tree which have a large spread, its wooded out on the lower trunk very nicely. The other 3 trees arent in such large pots yet so have been restricted in growth up to now, I will wait until spring and the repot them.

Lorax did you find your camera yet?

The largest of my plants has now a high of 13in and a spread of around 26in; it is growing in one single point, i.e. leaf after leaf is coming out from the trunk, see photo. I'm asking me how it will manage later to get more points to spread leafs? Thx

It's actually called a Yellow Flamboyant tree, or African Wattle.
