I am pleased to host a plant swap at my house in Burnaby (close to Imperial St & Canada Way) on the afternoon of Sunday, Oct 18, let's say 1:30pm (no earlier than 1pm) until 4:30pm (or so).

All in the Vancouver BC area are welcome, including "newbie" gardeners. ;-) Come join us for a good time of plant swapping, chatting about plants, etc. Bring your garden extras and find them good homes. Come away with new plants to try, and new gardening friends.

PLEASE USE THIS THREAD TO POST YOUR "HAVES" AND "WANTS". I will start a second thread for other swap-related discussions.

Re: Vancouver Swap : Oct 18 - Trade Lists

Thanks for the invitation, Lily. Here are a few of my available plants to start with; I'll probably add more as I notice them. Unfortunately this isn't enough notice for me to start anything from cuttings, but I'll consider that for spring.

Divisions of
Iris germanica 'Savannah Sunset'
Hosta 'Old Faithful'
Hosta 'Sweet Susan'

Woody plants:
Photinia villosa (messy but quite charming tree, 3-4 yr-old seedlings)
Physocarpus 'Diabolo' (starter shrub) - spoken for
Viburnum x juddii (3-4 yr-old shrub)

Hi Ladies!!!

I don't have too much to offer as a result of my many moves but I do have some of the following in pots that i can share.

HAVES:
Lemon balm
golden oregano
heuchera 'mars'
asters - purple
oxalis 'iron cross'
daylily - various named plants most red flowered - I'll post names later.
wooly thyme
Rose 'duchess de rohan' sucker
Rose 'charles de mills' sucker
Iris germanica unnamed - light blue, smells like grape juice.
hibiscus bluebird cuttings - I can prepare with rooting hormone but am not sure if they'd be rooted in time for the swap. If they don't strike then i can replace it in the spring but they usually are quite willing to root.

WANTS:
heuchera - other colors
other perennials and shrubs
edibles - raspberry suckers perhaps, thornless blackberry, grape vine cuttings, strawberry plants

I also have some of the black irises, not sure which one.

And several Hellebore seedlings, x orientalis. They are wild cards in terms of their eventual flower colour, but the parent plants are yellow and peach.

Re: Vancouver Swap : Oct 18 - Trade Lists

Hello Gardening Fever,

I just pruned my berry patch and got rid of 2 young thornless blackberry shrubs!

However, I should still have some raspberry plants to share. I also have young strawberry plants.

A note about the thornless blackberry shrubs:
I had purchased them as the "thornless' aspect appealed to me; however, after it fruited, I found the berries (though large) to be really not as flavourful as the thorny version. Then, by some bizzare unknown intervention, a thorny blackberry shrub started to grow in the same area last year, and after tasting the both berries side by side, I've decided to get rid of the thornless version. It just doesn't seem worth it. Instead, I've decided that I'll build a trellis support for the thorny one to make picking them easier. :)

I plan to survey my garden some time later this week to see what I have to share at the Plant Swap, so if I do find a thornless blackberry sucker or 2, I'll let you know. :)

I'm interested in your daylilies and heuchera.

Re: Vancouver Swap : Oct 18 - Trade Lists

I am way behind in my Fall cleanup, but with the Swap being one week away, I am posting what I have at this point.

Please note that I DON’T NEED TRADES for any of these, and will be looking for homes for anything I have dug up. If you are at all interested, please don’t be shy, let me know so I can put your name to it before the trade day. Use the discussion thread. I can also dig on the day of, but prefer to do so ahead, so I can focus on mixing and mingling.

HAVES, ALREADY POTTED UP:

Note that these are all good sized seedlings potted up recently in *small* pots (will need to be transplanted before winter), in some cases up to 5 plants per pot, or as seemed to make sense. (#) indicates how many pots ready at this point.

Echinops banaticus (Globe thistle) (7)
Helictotrichon sempervirens (Blue oat grass) (2)
Euphorbia (seems to be Euphorbia characias) (6)
Geranium “Victor Reiter” (1)
Unnamed hardy geraniums (2)
Sisyrinchium californicum (Yellow blue-eyed grass) (5)
Tiny red split maple seedling (1)
Astrantia major (Masterwort) (1*)
Campanula rapunculoides (Creeping bellflower) (1*)
Carex plantaginea (?) (1*)

*= Have lots more seedlings, let me know.

HAVE SEEDS:
Cyanus cardunculs (Cardoon) – 4 envelopes of 18 seeds each
Crocosmia “Lucifer”
Lychnis coronaria “Alba”

HAVES, ALREADY PULLED UP (bareroot / unpotted):

Centaurea cyanus (Bachelor’s buttons)
Stachys byzantina (Lamb’s ear) (lots!)
Buddleia davidii (Butterfly bush) – approx 2 yr old, purple (don’t know if I got enough root)
Salmonberry – don’t know if I got enough root

HAVE EXTRA, WOULD BE HAPPY TO DIG – if anyone is interested:

Osteospermum – the very hardy spreading purple one which many of us have by now
2 Unnamed Hardy geranium – pink flowers – large patch, should provide many rooted plants
Oxalis – nice spreading groundcover with white flowers
Petasites frigidus – great for moist spots
Symphoricarpos albus (Snowberry bush)
Fall asters – dark purple, light purple, white
Campanula rapunculoides (Creeping bellflower)
Ajuga reptans (Bugleweed)
Climbing hydrangea (Tiny white flower)
Iris, mini 4” tall purple one – have plants or seeds
Chocolate mint

CAN FIND / DIVIDE – if anyone specifically is looking for these:

Black mondo grass
Cornus canadensis (Bunchberry)
Campanula glomerata (Clustered bellflower - purple)
Coreopsis verticillata (“Zagreb”, I believe)
Weigela bush (dark leaves, pink flower)
Iris (2’ tall with small heavenly white flowers)
One small seedling of variegated maple

WANTS / WISH LIST:

Any Echinacea / coneflower other than E. purpurea (purple).
Acanthus mollis/spinosus (Bear’s breeches)
Tanacetum coccineum (Painted daisy) – especially bright pinks
Lupines – Reds/pinks/yellows/whites
Euphorbia marginata (Snow-On-The-Mountain) – or any variegated euphorbia
Platycodon grandiflorus 'Komachi' (Bellflower whose bells don’t open, they stay as balloons)
Lavendula stoechas (Spanish lavender) – lost all mine last winter
More hostas, especially variegated (I think the one I have lots of is “Patriot”)

Very low < 3” groundcovers for a planned flagstone pathway in a relatively moist shady area:
- “Magic Carpet” thyme
- Woolly thyme
- Other low creeping thymes
- Sagina subulata (Irish moss)
- Mentha requienii (Corsican mint)
- Arenaria balearica (Corsican Sandwort)
- Pratia pedunculata/Laurentia fluviatilis/Isotoma fluviatilis (Blue star creeper)

Re: Vancouver Swap : Oct 18 - Trade Lists

In addition to the items listed in my two posts above I have Ligularia siberica and Ligularia Britt-Marie Crawford. Plus a plant called Gillenia aka Porteranthus trifoliata (one of those naming issues).
Speaking of naming issues, I also have available a very large perennial that I am used to calling Cimicifuga dahurica, but which by today's nomenclature would be Actea. The bees LOVE this plant.

I wish I'd known about this trade day a bit sooner. I have approx 400 1-5 gal pots of various plants --many iris and lilies, but lots of other stuff. I will keep in mind the concept of trading plants and seeds before I give away my hundreds of plants sitting there waiting for me to divide them. Maybe next spring or fall.

Denise - You're very welcome to come out and join us on Sunday. Even though we try to arrange swaps ahead, a lot of swaps happen right at the time, and I think a lot of people haven't even posted their lists. PM me for my address, and come on out (but don't bring all 400 pots!).

thanks for the invite. I have plans this weekend, but I will keep the idea of trading in mind for next year and keep a better eye on the site. September is a busy back to school month for me so I don't spend a lot of time chatting and checking up on my various accounts. dt
