Hi - I have attached a photo of a purple star-shaped flower which I think comes from a bulb and is flowering early spring. It is getting quite prolific and I am concerned that it is a "weed" which may take over. Can anyone please help me? Thanks

Has it got bulbs? Looks a bit like my hyacinths [blue bells] but not quiet. Does not look like a native so maybe the northern hemisphere will know.

thanks Liz - I think it does have a bulb ... it's been a while since I pulled any out. I have bluebells and it is differerent as there is just the one star-shaped flower on the end of a stalk - quite a weak stalk - it's a bit like on a freesia but more flimsy. Let's hope when the other side of the world wakes up they may have some answers. Thanks for replying.

Looks like it is a happy camper in your climate. Must keep my eyes open for some. May be the bulb capital of Australia in the next valley have some.

Your Ipheion can become a bit of a problem on Vancouver Island. In a garden setting it is a spreader and difficult to contain or eradicate. Perhaps it would be well to keep an eye on it.

Thanks for that information I will definatly not chase this up. Will end up like onion weed in this soil and climate. Maybe that is why I have not really seen any of it. Probably has weed status here.
