Do you have plants on your patio, if so they are probably looking for flowers to pollinate, most ants are not harmful, unles they are red fire ants, most commonly found in the southern USA. how big are they, just a few millimeters or are they the big carpenter ants? If you can find the nest ( you may have to do some searching and following) there are powders at local hardware store that can be sprinkled on top of the ant hill so that it will be taken to the Queen ant.
